All American Expats take a look at page 3 of non-digital passports and page 28D of the new digital passports for the Internal Revenue Service statement. For tax year 2007 the maximum exclusion has been raised to $85,700.  After nearly 2 decades of working abroad I can tell you with all certainty that all income earned without regard where it is earned is to be reported. You can go to the IRS web site and look for these references:

A word of advise, I have seen tens of thousands of dollars paid to the IRS by individuals whose tax preparer, which includes many CPA’s, either knew nothing or had no understanding of the information contained in the references above. If your tax preparer doesn’t know anything about the above references either educate them or find someone who does understand the references. All of the references are subject to change.

I must respectfully disagree with Ms. Paquiz and her assessment that
there’s no longer a worldwide nursing shortage. Her quote referred to
conditions in the USA, only. Even so, I completely disagree with her.

The article, and Ms. Paquiz, provided no statistical information to
reinforce their claims. Remember, extraordinary claims REQUIRE
extraordinary evidence!

IMHO, Ms. Paquiz is just another misinformed Filipino when it comes to
work conditions and trends outside the RP. However, I do agree
there’s a glut of nurses in RP.

While the USA may be the ultimate prize for Filipina nurses, it’s not
the only desirable location where there’s a tremendous forecasted need
for nurses. Nearly every developed nation needs nurses, and the
demand far exceeds the supply.

Consider the following information:

A CRITICAL NURSING SHORTAGE

America’s healthcare system is facing a critical problem. A study in
the Journal of the American Medical Association predicted a 20%
shortage in the number of nurses needed in the healthcare system by
the year 2020. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that more
than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012. At
the same time, more RNs are reaching retirement age, and U.S. nursing
schools are unable to educate enough new RNs to meet the coming
demand. This critical shortage is made worse by the fact that an aging
U.S. population will require even greater care in the years ahead.

I’m certain there are similar stats for Australia, the European Union,
Japan, Korea, and Canada.

Although unscientific, I also consider data provided by my sister, an
RN in Southern California, USA. She says the nursing shortage is
worse than ever. She is consistently asked to work overtime, and
could easily work 60 to 80 hours a week if she had the physical
endurance to do so. She also says 50% of her peers are Filipinas, and
all nurses in her section have gained weight because the Filipinas
bring in the BEST food!

Cash is king, for sure, but does seller financing exist? Some sellers might be interested in a
steady cash flow for a few years, perhaps?

Please dont tell me your getting engaged and you havent even met yet, maybe I missed an earlier post saying you have been there and met her. Would anybody get engaged to a girl (or guy)from their home country without meeting first. Of course not unless an arranged marriage.

Greg W I apprecieate what yopu say but I’ll atleast chat with then
to determine if they will make a good friend before I turn them
away. But to each there own. Good luck and I hope your filipino
friends take care of you if something happens to you.. I wouldn’t
put any money on it.

It’s been a very hectic couple of days. We are going through the
process of selling a piece of land to the local water company, about 1
hectar, and the money is ready so we need to fly to the Phils to
finallise the sale. We are holidaying in the UK for two weeks from the
9th Aug so it means coming to the Phils beforehand. As you can imagine
its been a whirlwind to sort things out. Sorting a flight for the three
us to leave here in the UK in five days time required some creative
thinking and at a price we could afford. The schools break up here now
so the peak season starts now. Most quotes were around £750 but by
flying to Hong Kong and using Cebu Pacific to Manila I got it down to
about £600 a head. Anyway our final destination is Dumagete. We will
need to find a hotel once we arrive, having had a good experience
previously at the Bethal we will probably stay there but Tanjay would
be more convenient. Does anyone on the board know if there is a hotel
their or nearby say Amlan perhaps

-This is exactly the way I understood it Paul. I was interested in
buying some property there last time I was there, but when I found
out the rules of ownership I changed my mind. Why would I buy
property and have no title to it? My marriage was new so what if it
did not work out? Or what if I had it payed for and I passed on.
Would my children from my previous marrage have any title to it?
I was also looking at some property as an investment(lovely 900
meters of sand beach) I had a lot of friends that would jump on board
for such a nice investment but not if they could not own it
outright…..must be hard to get people from away ( as I like to call
them) to invest monies into the Phil.
Am I wrong…….someone tell me where my reasoning is wrong. Am
I totally off on this subject. If I work hard and spend all my hard
earned money on property I sure would like to own it outright. Even
a ten year lease does not make me feel comfortable.

P.S. If you are going to buy property and have it in your
spouse’s name you had better be sure you have a solid relationship.

My girlfriend lives in Manilla. Her brother is career militery there.
The militery will make cash advances and payday loans to the troops at
very high rates of interest. Spouses and siblings of militery personel
are allowed to deposit money which is in turn lent out. These deposits
pay very high rates of return in excess of 18%. My GF is very shrewd
and extremely tight when it comes to money (banking professional), so
if she says its a good thing , it probably is .

I have a friend who’s mother has put in a petition for her daughter and
has been waiting for a long time now. Her daughter has a boyfriend now
in the USA and is going to put in a petition to bring her to the USA.

My question is can he put in this petition at the same time that the
